Located at 1,620 metres above sea level and set at the foot of the impressive and world-famous Matterhorn lies Zermatt. This sophisticated alpine village has managed to preserve its authentic charm and offers countless possibilities for relaxation and adventure. Wherever you stand in Zermatt, the majestic Matterhorn rises above you, reaching an impressive 4,478 metres. The elevated position of the village creates panoramic views, characterised by cobblestone streets, picturesque wooden chalets and plenty of inviting spots to unwind after a day in the mountains.
Zermatt has been completely car-free since 1961. Visitors park at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch, from where a shuttle train takes you to Zermatt in about twelve minutes. Once in the village, you move around by modern electric transport or, if you prefer something nostalgic, by horse-drawn carriage. Many hotels offer a shuttle service, ensuring you arrive comfortably without carrying your luggage through the village.
Zermatt is known for its appealing mix of hiking and skiing areas. With more than fifty modern lifts and over 360 kilometres of carefully maintained slopes, stretching across the Theodul Pass, Furi, Riffelberg and up to the area around Sunnegga, there is something for every level. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the largest summer ski area in Europe and is used by Olympic teams for training. In winter, the village transforms into a wide-ranging ski area with opportunities for skiing, snowboarding and freestyle.
Zermatt offers a beautiful mix of charm, nature and outdoor activities. The village has a wide selection of places to eat, ranging from fondue and traditional alpine dishes to Michelin-starred restaurants. It is a destination that suits travellers looking for a practical, versatile and atmospheric place to stay.
