Colorful luxury boutique hotel with Michelin-starred restaurant in historic Gouda
Located in the heart of the historic centre of the incredibly charming city of Gouda, you'll find the monumental building of Relais & Châteaux Weeshuis Gouda. This unique place offers an oasis of tranquility in our oh so busy lives and is simultaneously the perfect getaway for a night or weekend away with your lover, your best friend or family.
As you walk up the cobbled streets and see the beautiful facade with red shutters, you will immediately feel the centuries-old history that the building holds. Subsequently, walk through the historic gate into the courtyard and you will be surprised by an atmospheric patio filled with colourful flowers. At reception, you will be welcomed by the hospitable staff and the unique look and feel of the hotel. Expressive colours, special prints and various nods to the history of the hotel and its location form a perfectly fitting whole.
This characteristic style is also carried through in the rooms and suites, all designed by interior architect Judith van Mourik. There are various types of rooms, ranging from suites where you can wonderfully cocoon to luxury rooms with tall windows and historical details. Weeshuis Gouda also features a beautiful 'I Do Suite', perfect for newlyweds.
Culinary connoisseurs are right at home at Weeshuis Gouda. Start the day with a comprehensive breakfast in the Regent's Room and end the day with a mouthwatering 3-, 4-, or 5-course menu in the 1 Michelin-starred restaurant LIZZ. At COCO, you can enjoy a casual lunch, afternoon tea, aperitifs and amazing cocktails and champagnes. COCO is renowned for its special and thematic afternoon tea, which is definitely a must-do during your visit.
In Gouda itself, you can enjoy wandering the cosy streets, sipping wine on one of the terraces or shopping in the Kleiweg and Zeugstraat. The authentic atmosphere of the city centre and the numerous cosy hospitality venues make a trip to Gouda unforgettable. The Museum Gouda (which you can roll to from the hotel) is also highly recommended. We are confident that both the hotel and the city of Gouda will surprise you!
From orphanage to luxury boutique hotel
The history of the current Orphanage Gouda dates back to the year 1599, when the Almoners Orphanage was put into use - an orphanage for the poor. After the orphanage was closed, it took many years until the building was used again; that happened in 1973 when it was turned into a public library. This closed in 2014 and since May 2021, the current boutique hotel has occupied the building. Owners Sharon and Lennart van Gastel, the beating heart behind Relais & Châteaux Orphanage Gouda, you may know from the Museum café Gouda, Keck and LF-Gouda. Between them and the building it was love at first sight, and with their eye for detail and love for hospitality, they have created a unique place in the city center.
Rooms and suites with their own character
All rooms and suites, designed by Judith van Mourik, each have their own unique character and a large wow factor. From the bright colors and soft duvets to the historic details and graphic shapes, everything is just right. Of course, the rooms have all the modern facilities of today, such as comfortable COCOMAT beds, bathtubs, well-stocked minibars, and luxury Zenology bath products. The soft slippers and thick bathrobes ensure ultimate relaxed mornings and evenings.
Enjoying gastronomy
At Hotel Weeshuis Gouda, culinary pleasure is held in high regard, and that's visible at all times of the day. Whether it's at the extensive breakfast, casual lunch, high tea, or dinner. The refined dishes, surprising bites, and mignardises have an international twist and are prepared with responsible ingredients. Head Chef Marijn Kajuiter wields the scepter in the kitchen, creating beautiful pieces of art on your plate. He has worked for various star restaurants, such as La Tante Claire in London, the Amsterdam restaurant De Kas, and the Irish The Cliff House Hotel, with which he earned his first Michelin star in 2010. He also received the ‘Rising Chef Trophy’ from Relais & Châteaux.
Things to do in Gouda
Gouda is (yet) not one of the most popular cities for a city trip in our own country, but that might be for the best. This way, the city has managed to perfectly preserve its original charm. Narrow cobblestone streets, atmospheric squares, historic buildings... During a walk through the city center, your eyes will be treated to a feast. In the middle of the Market, for example, you will find the town hall, which has been renovated several times over the centuries. The cheese market - every Thursday morning from April to September - is a historic phenomenon and a special experience. What else is Gouda famous for? Stroopwafels! So definitely remember to enjoy a real Gouda stroopwafel. History and culture lovers should definitely visit the Gouda Weigh House and Museum Gouda. Also, the city is located near the Reeuwijkse plassen, a recreational area where you can enjoy walking and cycling.
